Many commuters traveling near Elon University were rerouted on Feb. 16 due to a temporary closing of Williamson Avenue, which started at the Town of Elon Post Office and included the railroad crossing.
The closing was due to a rewiring of power poles on both sides of the crossing. The repair work was being conducted through contractors with Duke Energy.
Detour signs were posted for motorists to direct them to alternative crossings. In the event that Williamson Avenue Railroad Crossing should be closed, motorists may rerout to Woodale Avenue or Ballpark Avenue. Those commuting by foot may utilize the crossings on E. Trollinger or Church Street.
“A lot of students are always on their phone, so it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings and look where you are going when crossing the tracks,” Town of Elon Police Lt. Kelly Blackwelder said.
